About this course

The course develops ensemble playing in Cuban and Salsa styles through tutor-led rhythm, time and sight-reading exercises. Participants study repertoire and standards including Son Montuno, Mambo, Cha-cha-cha, Bolero and Latin Jazz, using listening examples and harmonic analysis to explore improvisation over common chord progressions. Sessions also examine how rhythmic patterns interlock between instruments in an Afro-Cuban group. Participants receive coaching on soloing and improvisation, applying these ideas while playing in the ensemble.

What you'll learn

  • Identify characteristic rhythms and styles associated with Afro-Cuban and Salsa music.
  • Analyse repertoire and chord progressions used for improvisation in these styles.
  • Apply approaches to soloing over commonly used harmonic patterns.
