If you want to build confidence, start with a beginner-friendly in-person class that helps you practise being seen, heard or more expressive around other people. Good options include public speaking, communication skills, acting, improv, singing, storytelling, voice and presentation skills classes.
If you feel nervous, look for a beginner class, taster session, one-day workshop or short course with a supportive description. Public speaking, communication skills, acting for beginners, improv for beginners and singing for beginners can all be good starting points, especially when the class is clearly designed for adults with little or no experience.
In-person classes can be especially useful for building confidence because they give you real practice with other people in the room. You can work on speaking, listening, body language, eye contact, presence, voice and handling nerves in a supportive group setting.
Choose public speaking or presentation skills if you want more confidence at work, in meetings or when speaking to groups. Choose acting if you want to become more expressive and comfortable being seen. Choose improv if you want to become more spontaneous and less afraid of making mistakes. Choose singing or voice if you want to become more comfortable using your voice.
Yes. Acting and improv classes can be useful for building confidence because they help you practise presence, voice, listening, eye contact, spontaneity and expressing yourself in a group. Beginner acting and improv classes are usually more about playful practice than performance pressure.
Confidence-building classes can help shy or socially anxious adults practise in a supportive environment, but they are not a replacement for therapy or medical support. If anxiety feels severe or stops you from doing everyday things, it may be worth speaking to a qualified professional as well as choosing a gentle beginner class.
Look for a one-day confidence workshop, beginner public speaking class, acting taster, improv taster, voice workshop or communication skills course. A shorter class is often the easiest way to test whether the format, teacher and group atmosphere feel right before committing to a longer course.
