185 Mandarin language classes in London

If you are completely new to Mandarin, start with an absolute beginner Mandarin class, beginner Mandarin level 1 course or introductory Mandarin Chinese course. These classes are designed for adults with no previous experience and usually cover tones, pinyin, basic pronunciation, greetings, simple questions, everyday vocabulary and an introduction to Chinese characters.

No. Absolute beginner Mandarin classes usually introduce pinyin first and bring in Chinese characters gradually. You do not normally need to read or write Chinese before joining a beginner course. If the class is beginner plus, improver or HSK-focused, check whether it expects previous knowledge of characters.

Most beginner Mandarin classes use pinyin to help with pronunciation and tones. Some courses then introduce simplified characters, while others may include traditional characters depending on the provider and course focus. If you have a specific goal, such as China, Taiwan, business or heritage learning, check the course description before choosing.

Mandarin tones can feel unfamiliar at first, but they are easier to build with live practice and correction. A good beginner Mandarin class will introduce tones gradually through listening, repetition, simple words and short phrases, rather than expecting you to master everything at once.

Choose an absolute beginner Mandarin class if you are new to Mandarin, tones, pinyin and characters. Choose a beginner class if you know some pinyin, basic phrases or simple characters but cannot yet hold a conversation. Choose an improver Mandarin class if you have studied Mandarin before and want to build vocabulary, grammar, listening and speaking confidence.

Yes. Learn.London lists Mandarin conversation classes in London alongside structured Mandarin courses. Conversation classes are usually best if you already know some Mandarin and want to practise speaking, listening, tones and confidence. If you are a complete beginner, a structured beginner Mandarin course is usually a better starting point.

Some Mandarin classes may help you prepare for HSK, especially if they mention HSK, exam preparation, vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening or writing practice. If HSK is your goal, check whether the course is specifically exam-focused or whether it is a general Mandarin class that supports your wider learning.

Yes. Mandarin can be useful for work, business, travel, culture and family connections. If your goal is professional, look for Mandarin classes that mention business Mandarin, workplace vocabulary, practical communication or conversation. For most learners, a general beginner or improver course is the best foundation before moving into business Mandarin.

Apps can help with vocabulary, pinyin and daily practice, but in-person Mandarin classes give you live speaking practice, correction, tone practice, listening support and help with characters. If your goal is to actually speak Mandarin clearly and confidently, an in-person class can be a useful complement to self-study.
