Al-Andalus: A History of Muslim Spain

About this course

The course traces the expansion of Arab rule from the Levant and North Africa into Iberia, examining Al-Andalus between 711 and 1492 and its later impact on Spanish Muslims and converts to Christianity. It considers the period’s influence on religion, law, governance, art, architecture, agriculture, technology, food, science and mathematics, alongside slavery and the treatment of minorities. The course also explores how Christian Spain regarded and drew on Muslim civilisation. Teaching is entirely class-based, with discussion and debate and no independent work required.
