About this course

The course traces the development of the British Empire across Ireland, the Caribbean, India, Africa, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It considers competing explanations for imperial expansion, including war, trade, religion and individual influence, alongside the meaning and methods of imperialism. Teaching combines lecturer exposition with PowerPoint presentations, video, primary-source study and group discussions or debates. The course also examines regional differences in colonial impact, the experiences of indigenous peoples, labour systems and the effects of enslavement within and beyond British colonies.
