About this course

The course introduces bass guitar fundamentals through fretboard technique, left- and right-hand positions, scales, arpeggios, chord symbols, chord sequences and music and rhythm notation. Rhythm and tempo exercises develop timekeeping, while creative work explores groove playing in swing, rock, R&B, funk and shuffle funk styles. Learners practise exercises with accompaniment from guitar, piano or backing tracks. Classwork includes feedback, advice and question-and-answer sessions, with play-along tracks and handouts provided to support practice beyond lessons.

Is this course right for you?

This course is designed for absolute beginners and does not require previous bass guitar experience. The first lesson starts with fundamental concepts before building skills throughout the term. Learners are encouraged to perform exercises with accompaniment and take part in performance-focused classwork.

Before you go

• Learners should bring a bass guitar and a pen or pencil.
• Handouts are provided for classwork, including material on theory, harmony, rhythm, phrasing and technique.
