About this course

The workshop examines how light, colour, shape and tonal range affect black-and-white images. Participants consider suitable subjects, composition and the choice between colour and monochrome treatment. Teaching also covers digital conversion methods, including monochrome options such as sepia and bromoil, with exploration of software and plugins used for black-and-white processing. The course is delivered in a small group, allowing for individual attention during the workshop.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improvers with a basic understanding of exposure and manual camera settings. Learners are expected to work with a camera that has full manual controls and take part in a small-group workshop.

• Basic knowledge of aperture, lenses, shutter speed, ISO and exposure modes is needed
• A compact, DSLR or mirrorless camera with full manual controls is suitable

Before you go

• A camera can be provided if participants do not have access to one; suitable personal cameras include mirrorless, DSLR and compact models with full manual controls.
• Participants are recommended to bring their camera manual, a fully charged battery and an empty memory card.
• Comfortable shoes are recommended.
• An external flash may be brought if owned.
