About this course
The course develops clarinet technique through work on breathing, articulation, fingering and tone, alongside notation, rhythm, aural skills and musical theory. Participants begin repertoire around Grade 2 standard, explore solo playing and interpretation, and may work on individual pieces suggested in consultation with the tutor. Teaching combines explanation and demonstration with group playing, individual playing and class discussion. Repertoire spans classical, jazz and popular styles, with opportunities to play duets and ensemble music.

Is this course right for you?
This course is intended for improvers who have been playing clarinet for at least a year, are comfortable reading music at around Grade 2 standard and have some experience with very simple improvisation. Participation includes group and individual playing, discussion and following written and verbal instructions in English. Regular practice outside class is expected.
- Requires regular practice outside class, ideally for at least 20 minutes on five days each week

Before you go
- Bring a Bb clarinet, a supply of reeds and a pencil.
- A recommended music book will need to be purchased; the suggested titles include Abracadabra (3rd edition), 40 Modern Studies for Clarinet and Easy Clarinet Duets.
- The tutor provides other musical material.
- Regular practice outside class is recommended, ideally for at least 20 minutes on five days each week.
