Classic jazz guitar

About this course

The course develops jazz guitar technique through chord playing in different forms and styles, voice-leading chord sequences, accurate melody playing and embellishment. It also introduces chord-melody playing and improvisation over classic jazz and blues sequences. Teaching combines group playing with opportunities for individual solo playing. Demonstration, worksheets and learning by ear are used alongside the class activities, with practice and homework tasks forming part of the course.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improver-level guitarists developing beyond fundamental techniques. Participants should already be able to play barre chords, identify notes to at least the seventh fret, and play major and pentatonic scales. Group playing and occasional solo playing are central, with daily practice and homework expected.

• Music reading is useful but not required, as tablature is also provided
• The course includes both ensemble playing and solo playing by turn
• Regular practice and completion of homework are expected
