About this course

The course develops classical guitar technique through melody playing, legato, chordal accompaniment, scales and arpeggios. Learners extend their fretboard knowledge to the 12th fret and explore standard and alternative tunings, including open G and drop D. Teaching combines group practice, ensemble playing and analysis of the pieces studied. Repertoire spans Classical, Spanish, Baroque, Latin, pop and English folk styles, with opportunities to play solo to the class.

• Read notation across the fretboard up to the 12th fret
• Combine a melody with harmonic accompaniment
• Play three-octave scales and arpeggios
• Use alternative tunings including open G and drop D
• Perform solo and ensemble repertoire
• Apply improved left- and right-hand technique to musical interpretation

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for improvers who have completed Classical guitar level 2 or developed comparable skills. Learners should already read notation to at least the fifth fret and play melodies and chords. Participation includes group playing, individual playing to the class and practice between sessions.

• Previous classical guitar study and established practice habits are expected
• Learners are expected to practise between sessions and show progress
• The course includes both ensemble playing and individual performance opportunities
