Clothes Making Beginners: Modest Fashion

About this course

Participants learn the principles of clothes making while working with a commercial pattern and a home sewing machine to produce a garment in their own size. The course focuses on modest-fashion styles, with simple pattern adjustments and construction methods for garments featuring elements such as higher necklines, longer sleeves or looser silhouettes. Teaching combines whole-class instruction with demonstrations, technical materials, discussions and individual guidance. Each term explores a different garment shape, allowing learners to work with varied construction approaches. Sessions also include feedback and health and safety guidance for using machinery and specialist equipment.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners and people with limited or no previous sewing experience. Learners should be able to speak, read and write in English and have basic numeracy skills. Teaching takes place through whole-class activities alongside individual support, and garment preparation may involve standing at high tables.

Before you go

• Bring a pen, notebook, folder and sewing kit; guidance on the sewing kit is provided at the start of the course.
• A pattern selected by the tutor must be purchased from the college for use on the course.
• Pattern paper is available in the fashion studios, while calico is available to purchase.
• A health and safety induction is required before using machinery or specialist equipment.
• Sewing machines use a foot-operated speed control.
• The fashion studios have lift access. Contact the tutor if standing at high tables may be difficult.
