About this course
The course examines how music is composed for film and television, including the use of cues, mock-ups and spotting sessions. It also introduces thematic opposition and considers scoring approaches through selected composers and screen music examples. Teaching combines demonstrations, explanations, practical workshops, lectures, audio-visual presentations and discussion of listening assignments. Participants take notes and develop individual projects, including their own musical ideas for film. Demonstrations use Logic Pro X, with the techniques applicable to other digital audio workstations.

Songwriting or composition experience is welcomed but not required, while some familiarity with Apple computers may be helpful. Before you go
- Access to a computer outside class is required.
- A USB memory stick is needed to save work.
- Learners should bring pen and paper for notes.
- Demonstrations use Logic Pro X, but the techniques can be applied to Ableton, Cubase, Pro Tools and Reaper.
- The course may involve high volume levels, and bringing earplugs is strongly encouraged.
- Handouts and other course materials are provided by the tutor.
