Contemporary drawing sketchbook

About this course

The course examines how writing, research and drawing can combine to generate images and ideas within a contemporary sketchbook. Participants will consider contrasting approaches to pace, structure and style, including spontaneous and planned methods, and explore how personal and formal content can coexist. A gallery visit introduces collections, exhibition-making and curatorial approaches as sources for creative development. Studio sessions then use this research to develop an individual theme or area of interest through mixed-media processes including biro, acrylic, gouache, graphite, photography and collage.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners who have some drawing experience and are developing beyond introductory techniques. Participants are expected to engage with their own work through reflection, while research or sketchbook activity between sessions may be helpful but is not essential.

• Some previous drawing experience is expected
• An introductory drawing course or around 30 hours of study is recommended
• Comfort with pencil, charcoal and pen is specified
• The course includes independent reflection on personal work

Before you go

• Bring a journal, notebook or sketchbook-in-progress for the first session.
• Additional research or sketchbook work between sessions is helpful but not essential.
