About this course

The course examines how grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, paragraphs, vocabulary and figurative language shape meaning and stylistic effect. Participants will consider conventions and deliberate departures from them, compare prose and poetry, and analyse passages for distinctive techniques. Teaching combines writing activities, reading and analysis, whole-class and small-group discussion, and tutor feedback. Creative exercises and assignments provide opportunities to test approaches to style, including voice, clarity, euphony, imitation, parody and pastiche. Participants will also reflect on their own writing and contribute constructive responses to classmates’ work.

What you'll learn

  • Apply grammatical conventions and deliberate deviations more effectively in creative writing
  • Use syntax, punctuation and sentence structure to influence meaning and effect
  • Identify and distinguish features of different prose and poetry styles
  • Analyse how vocabulary, figurative language and voice contribute to style
  • Develop and articulate aspects of an individual writing style through exercises, feedback and reflection
