About this course

The course explores contemporary soft-fibre basketry through coiling, checkweave plaiting and twining. Participants examine relevant samples, watch technique demonstrations and practise with materials including yarn, paper, cane and foraged fibres, receiving observation and feedback during the process. Beginners work on foundational techniques, while more experienced participants can develop individual projects. The course also considers gathering, preparing and storing materials, sustainable approaches such as recycling and upcycling, and basketry’s use in global and contemporary craft.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for beginners and learners with existing basketry experience. No previous experience is necessary, although a degree of manual dexterity is required. Beginners develop fundamental techniques, while experienced participants can work on their own projects. Participation includes discussion and show and tell with the group.
