About this course

The course examines film history through a selection of films from different periods, countries and cinematic traditions. Sessions consider how film form has developed, how visual style expresses ideas, and how spectatorship can be understood personally, historically and theoretically. Teaching combines tutor-led introductions with screenings of complete films, followed by large-group discussion. Screenings are drawn from a proposed programme and may change subject to availability. The course is framed around collective viewing while introducing analytical approaches and terminology used in film studies.

• Participants should bring a pen and paper, or a laptop or other device.
• Handouts and other materials are provided by the tutor.
• Looking into a scheduled film before the session may be useful but is not essential.
