Cultureplex Ciné-Club: Folk Horror

About this course

The course examines how folk horror uses natural forces, supernatural figures and tensions between culture and nature to explore social anxieties. Screenings include established and recent examples of the genre, with each film considered in relation to cultural identity, environmental breakdown and contemporary fears. Teaching combines tutor introductions, complete film screenings and large-group discussion. Short extracts from feminist film theory may also be suggested as supporting reading.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for learners at all levels and does not require particular skills. It introduces aspects of folk horror and film studies while also accommodating those who already have some knowledge of film or the genre. Participation includes discussing films in a large group.
