About this course

The course examines film history and the development of film form through a changing selection of complete screenings, ranging from early cinema to contemporary work. Each film is introduced before viewing and discussed afterwards in relation to visual style, cinematic self-expression and spectatorship. Sessions also consider personal, historical and theoretical approaches to watching films. The course introduces technical vocabulary and critical methods used in film studies, while providing opportunities to place individual films within broader developments in cinema. Advance research may be useful for some screenings but is not essential.

What you'll learn

  • Analyse films in detail using critical film studies methods
  • Apply key technical terms when discussing film form and style
  • Trace important developments in film history through individual films
  • Describe a range of theoretical perspectives on cinema and spectatorship
  • Discuss films in a large-group setting
