Draping on the Stand: Bodices

About this course

The course introduces draping as a method of pattern cutting, with fabric modelled directly on a dressmaker’s stand. Participants work through a tutor-set project exploring bodice shapes, silhouettes, fabric grain and weight, then translate draped forms into two-dimensional paper patterns. Teaching combines demonstrations, whole-class instruction, individual work, tutor-led discussion and one-to-one feedback. The course also addresses the relationship between three-dimensional form, design, shape and proportion.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners in fashion design and pattern cutting. Learners should be able to speak, read and write in English; basic numeracy is described as an advantage. Sessions include demonstrations, individual work, group teaching and tutor feedback. Some work involves standing at high tables or at a dressmaker’s stand, although sitting is possible if needed.

Before you go

• Students must bring a basic sewing kit including fabric scissors, paper scissors, dressmaker’s pins, a tape measure, tracing wheel, pencil and sharpener, design tape, pen and notebook.
• Pattern paper and card are available in the studios.
• Some pattern-cutting tools are provided for use in the studio.
• Calico can be purchased from the tutor for an additional fee.
• A health and safety induction is required before using machinery or specialist equipment.
• Eating is not permitted in the fashion studios; bottled water is allowed.
