About this course

The course develops drum kit technique and rhythmic vocabulary across contemporary drumming styles. Learners work on timekeeping with and without a click or backing track, apply rudiments, and practise grooves based on crotchets, quavers, triplets and semiquavers. Sessions combine verbal instruction, practical demonstrations, group work, individual practice, discussions and question-and-answer activities. Participants also develop chart-reading and wider music-reading skills, applying these in ensemble-focused playing and performances to the class.

Is this course right for you?

This intermediate course is intended for players developing beyond fundamental drum kit skills. It requires either prior Level 1 attendance or the ability to play specified crotchet-, quaver-, triplet- and semiquaver-based grooves, together with some basic music-reading knowledge. Participation includes group and individual practice, discussions and performing for the class.

• A regular practice routine is essential between lessons.
• Learners work both independently and as part of the group.
• The course includes performance in front of the class.

Before you go

• Bring a pair of drumsticks.
• Earplugs are strongly encouraged because lessons may involve high volume levels.
• A notepad and pen are optional.
