About this course

The course introduces the fundamentals of electric guitar playing, including tuning, pickup and tone controls, open and barre chords, scales, strumming patterns and simple songs. Learners also practise picking single notes, locating notes on three strings, understanding FX pedals and using suitable hand positions. Teaching combines talks, listening assignments, demonstrations, note-taking, practical workshops and group work. The class also includes group performances, giving learners opportunities to prepare and play tunes together.

What you'll learn

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for absolute beginners and learners who have already learned a few chords. It uses a group-learning format with in-class performances, and learners are expected to complete weekly homework and prepare tunes for performance.

• Learners should be prepared to practise between lessons
• A strong interest in electric guitar playing is expected

Before you go

• Learners must bring an electric guitar to lessons.
• Amps are provided when needed.
• Bring manuscript paper, a notebook and writing materials.
• Weekly homework is set, including assignments and preparation of tunes for class performance.
