About this course

The course examines film genre as a way of understanding how films are made, marketed and interpreted. It traces the development of genres including comedy, romance, horror, melodrama, musicals, westerns and gangster films, as well as hybrid forms such as screwball comedy and romantic comedy.

  • Identify a range of film genres and their defining characteristics

  • Analyse how studios used genres to distinguish films and reach particular audiences

It introduces the subject while also offering material for those extending existing film knowledge. Participation includes viewing extracts and discussing films in small and large groups.
