About this course

The course introduces flute technique from the first sounds on the head joint, including embouchure, air control, tone, posture, breathing, tonguing and slurring. Learners develop treble-clef reading, pitch and rhythm while playing tunes, an octave of notes, and introductory major and natural minor scales and arpeggios. Teaching combines tutor demonstration and explanation with class discussion, group playing in unison or parts, individual playing, and accompaniment from backing tracks or piano.

What you'll learn

  • Demonstrate basic flute technique, including embouchure, breathing, tone production and tuning
  • Use tonguing and slurring to articulate notes
  • Play an octave of notes with developing finger technique
  • Read basic music notation in the treble clef
  • Play tunes rhythmically and in tune
  • Apply basic musicianship skills including listening, sight-reading and memorisation
