Flute 2A

About this course

The course develops flute technique through work on tone, tuning, articulation, embouchure, breathing, phrasing, dynamics, vibrato, posture, finger technique and scales. It also introduces aural work, improvisation, sight-reading, memorisation, musical interpretation, theory and style through varied repertoire. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations and explanations with individual playing, playing alongside the tutor, ensemble work, listening to other students and recordings, pianist and backing-track practice, and class discussion. The course includes solo and ensemble performance techniques and work towards approximately Grade 4 standard.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for improvers with around one to two years of flute playing and a standard beyond Grade 1. Participation includes individual playing, ensemble work, listening and class discussion, with regular practice between classes.

• Learners need to follow written and verbal instructions in English.
• The course includes both playing independently and making music with others.

Before you go

• Bring a flute, cleaning accessories, a notebook and pencil.
• Music for the course must be purchased, with advice available from the tutor; some ensemble music is provided.
• Regular practice between classes is recommended, ideally for 20 minutes on at least five days each week.
• Occasional small written assignments are set outside class.
