From the Congress of Berlin of 1878 to 1914: how Europe went from peace to war

About this course

The course traces the breakdown of the post-1815 European balance of power from the Congress of Berlin in 1878 to the outbreak of the First World War. It examines nationalism, colonial expansion, shifting alliances and rivalries involving Germany, Britain, France, Russia and Austria-Hungary, alongside crises in Morocco and the Balkans. Teaching combines lectures supported by PowerPoint presentations with discussion in large and small groups. Topics include German foreign policy, the Entente Cordiale, the alliance system, the Balkan Wars and the assassination of Archduke Franz-Ferdinand.

• Analyse the changing direction of German foreign policy from Bismarck to Kaiser Wilhelm II's Weltpolitik.
• Explain the reasons for the rapprochement between Britain, France and Russia.
