About this course
The course introduces jazz piano through basic harmony, improvisation and rhythmic ideas. Learners practise piano individually, listen to other students and the tutor, and work with musical examples through singing and clapping exercises. Teaching combines verbal explanation with handouts, videos, demonstrations and learner participation. Topics include improvising over simple chord sequences, applying jazz-style melodic, harmonic and rhythmic ideas, exploring blues, swing and Latin jazz, and developing left- and right-hand independence.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for pianists at around Grade 3 ABRSM standard or above. Participation includes individual piano playing, listening to others, and singing and clapping exercises. Learners may approach the material through two-hand playing, playing by ear, or reading a melody line with chord symbols.
- Previous practical piano skills at approximately Grade 3 ABRSM level or equivalent are required
- Reading piano notation is advantageous but is not the only route into the course material
- Learners should be prepared to play individually as well as listen to classmates and the tutor
