About this course

The course traces the development of modern political philosophy from early modern thought through the twentieth century. It considers Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and Marx alongside the effects of the English Civil War, colonial expansion and the French Revolution. Topics include natural law, liberty, equality, sovereignty, property, the social contract, utilitarianism, political economy, communism and fascism. Teaching combines tutor presentations with seminar discussion. Learners will work with extracts from philosophical texts, supported by suggested weekly reading that is not compulsory.
