Japanese Beginners with Art History

About this course

The course develops foundational Japanese through greetings, introductions, personal information, countries and nationalities, descriptions of places, time expressions and prepositions. Learners are introduced to basic Japanese phonetics and characters while exploring Japanese art history through objects in the British Museum’s Japan Gallery. Teaching uses speaking and listening activities, pair and group work, role play, pictures, realia and audio-visual materials where appropriate. The course also includes a museum visit and may involve homework between sessions.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners in Japanese. Participation involves oral classroom activities, pair and group work, role play and some homework when required. Learners should be able to follow simple instructions and read course documents in English, and be comfortable using numbers in everyday situations such as handling money or telling the time.
