About this course
The workshop uses jazz standards to examine melody, form and repertoire while participants play with others. Analytical work introduces major-scale harmony, the cycle of fourths and fifths, modes, harmonic minor, pentatonic and blues scales, and chord-scale relationships. Improvisation is approached through rhythm, phrasing and vocabulary, with practical strategies for applying the material. The course also addresses major ii-V-I progressions and ways to structure individual practice between classes.
