Jazz Workshop – Improvers

About this course

Participants use a range of jazz standards to examine melody, harmony and musical structure while extending their improvisation. The workshop addresses rhythmic awareness, phrasing and improvisational vocabulary, alongside practical ideas for individual practice. It also develops understanding of minor 2-5-1s and gives learners opportunities to apply these concepts while playing with others.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for musicians developing beyond fundamental jazz skills. Participants should have good technical competence on their instrument, basic knowledge of jazz theory and notation, and experience such as completing Jazz Workshop 1 or improvising for a couple of years. The class involves playing with others and requires commitment to practice and punctuality.

• Good technical competence on the chosen instrument is expected.
• Basic jazz music theory and notation knowledge is expected.
• Previous experience may include Jazz Workshop 1 or around two years exploring jazz improvisation.
• Regular practice and punctual attendance are part of the course expectations.
