Latin America: From the independence wars to the mid-20th century

About this course

The course traces Latin America from the independence of Spanish and Portuguese colonies through the era of caudillos, liberal dictatorships and oligarchic republics. It examines the region’s integration into the world economy, the export-led development model and its effects on political participation and traditional elites. Teaching combines lectures with group discussions, supported by PowerPoint presentations and handouts. Discussion preparation includes reading two articles outside class, provided on the course website. The course concludes with the political effects of the Great Depression, including populism in larger economies and personal dictatorships in less developed ones.
