About this course
This introductory session considers thematic concerns in Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet and comedy As You Like It. Learners will explore short scenes, examine Shakespeare’s use of language and discuss how aspects of the plays work in performance. Teaching combines brief slide presentations, readings of short extracts and tutor-guided group discussion. The session is designed as an initial exploration rather than a full study of either play.

The course is intended for beginners and does not require previous knowledge or experience of literature. Its introductory format involves listening to short presentations, reading extracts and contributing to group discussion about Shakespeare.

Before you go
- A handout of short reading extracts will be emailed a few days before the session and a paper copy will be provided on the day.
- Reading the extracts before the session is helpful.
- Bring the extracts handout, a pen and paper for taking notes.
