Looking at winter trees

About this course

The course examines the features that help distinguish common trees during winter, including bark, twigs, leaves, overall shape, seeds and fruits. Participants will select trees showing seasonal characteristics and learn their common and botanical names. Teaching is practical and participative, with reference to useful books and guide sheets to support observation and identification.

This introductory course is open to everyone and involves participating in outdoor walks and observation activities. It is intended for learners beginning to explore tree identification, with health and safety instructions to be followed during the sessions.

Before you go

• Strong, non-slip walking shoes are required.
• Warm clothing, a raincoat and an umbrella are needed because classes take place whatever the weather.
• A notebook and pen may be useful.
• Participants who already have a tree identification book or hand lens may bring them.
• There is a break for tea or coffee; participants may bring a flask.
