Machine Knitting: Beginners and Returners

About this course

The course combines tutor demonstrations with supported machine-knitting practice. Beginners can produce reference samples while learning to set up and take down a machine, test yarns and tensions, and use hand tooling, hems, shaping and punch-card patterning. Returning learners may undertake additional exercises alongside the set work. Technical handouts, one-to-one guidance, group discussion, show-and-tell and group critique are used throughout. Learners may also develop textile work for possible submission to the MADE@Morley Exhibition, with tutor guidance.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners and learners returning to machine knitting to refresh or extend their skills. Hand-knitting knowledge may be useful but is not essential. Participation includes practical work, discussion, show-and-tell and group critique, and learners need moderate fitness to move the machine carriage back and forth.

• The course involves moving the knitting machine carriage repeatedly.
• Learners are expected to take part in group discussion and critique as well as individual practical work.

Before you go

• Knitting machines, yarns and specialist materials are supplied, including Lycra, wire, monofilament and Solvron.
• A notebook, pencil, pen and small pair of scissors are helpful. Learners may also bring an A4 folder for handouts and samples, or their own yarn for specific projects.
• The studio is accessible by stairs or by lift and stair lift combined. The machines are fairly heavy; learners with mobility or back problems should advise the tutor, who can assist with setting up and taking down the machine.
