About this course
Participants select a bisque-fired vase from a range of pre-made pieces, then decorate it with Raku glazes before it enters the kiln. The session introduces the distinctive Raku process, in which glazed pottery is removed while red-hot and exposed to combustible materials, creating changes in colour, texture and surface pattern. Participants can watch this firing process as their vase is transformed, with results varying from piece to piece.
What you'll learn
- Apply Raku glazes and decorative finishes to a bisque-fired vase.
- Observe how Raku firing affects glazes and clay surfaces.
Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for beginners and explicitly states that no previous pottery experience is needed. Participation involves selecting and decorating an individual vase, followed by observing the firing process.
Before you go
- No items need to be brought to the session.
- The vase, materials, glazing and firing are included.
- The piece is fired to up to 1000°C and remains porous, so it is not food safe.
