About this course

The course examines pilgrimage from its ancient and early Christian origins through major medieval journeys to Ireland, Jerusalem and the Holy Land, Constantinople and Rome. It considers why people travelled, including faith, penance, healing, adventure and status, alongside the practical conditions of travel, such as routes, accommodation, dangers and costs. Teaching combines lectures, maps, visual material, group discussion and short extracts from primary sources. The course also explores pilgrims’ experiences on the road and the wider cultural and religious effects of pilgrimage.
