Memoir Writing Place and Setting (Advanced)

About this course

Participants develop extracts from their memoir while examining the role of setting and place. Weekly writing activities encourage experimentation with different approaches and styles, including descriptions of interior and exterior environments and writing prompted by memories of place. The course combines workshops, class discussion and study of texts from a range of life writing. Participants share excerpts from work in progress with fellow students for feedback and develop critical responses to writing about place.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for writers with some previous experience of memoir or creative writing, although beginners in the subject are welcome. It involves contributing to class discussions, taking part in workshops and sharing excerpts of work in progress with fellow students for feedback.

• Beginners in the subject are welcome if they have a reasonable degree of literacy.

Before you go

• A small amount of homework is set each week.
• Participants should bring pen and paper.
• Time is needed for writing and reading outside class.
• Some writing may take place outdoors, weather permitting.
