Music theory at the keyboard: level 1

About this course

The course introduces theory through immediate application at the keyboard. Topics include chord types and patterns in C major, melody harmonisation, cadences, the circle of fifths, and movement beyond C major. Participants also encounter notation, musical terms, dynamics and articulation. Teaching combines keyboard demonstrations, guided group playing, listening and analysis, alongside short written or practical tasks. Weekly material may include chord drills, melodies and harmonic exercises for practice between sessions.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with some prior piano or keyboard experience, including those who have completed Piano/keyboards 1B or have equivalent experience. Learners should be able to read simple notation, play basic scales and use both hands at the keyboard. No advanced theory knowledge is required. Participation includes group playing, guided practice and listening activities.

• At least six months of piano tuition or equivalent experience is specified.
• Weekly material is intended to be practised between sessions.
