About this course

The course examines Japanese approaches to garment construction, including preparing calico for draping and developing flat patterns with a Japanese aesthetic. Participants transfer designs to pattern paper and true them to an intermediate standard, using appropriate pattern cutting techniques. Teaching combines whole-class demonstrations, tutor-led discussions, individual work sessions and one-to-one feedback. Learners work on a tutor-set project while setting personal targets linked to the course outcomes and possible progression to advanced study.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate learners with basic pattern cutting experience. The stated entry skills include using pattern cutting tools, working from a pattern block, adding seam allowances, notches and grainlines, pivoting a dart, and truing a seam. Classes combine group instruction with individual work and feedback.

  • Previous pattern cutting study or equivalent competence is required
  • Fluent English reading, writing and comprehension are required
  • Digital, mathematics and numeracy skills are desirable but not essential
  • Work may involve standing at high tables for periods of time

Before you go

  • Bring a basic sewing kit including fabric scissors, dressmaker’s pins, a tape measure and a tracing wheel.
  • Bring a pattern cutting kit including a pencil and sharpener, pattern curves, a rubber, paper scissors, masking tape, design tape, a pen and a notebook.
  • Pattern paper and card are available for use in the studios, and some pattern cutting tools are provided.
  • Calico is available from the tutor for purchase.
  • A health and safety induction is required before using machinery or specialist equipment.
  • The studios are accessed by a lift to the first floor. Eating is not permitted in the studios, although bottled water is allowed.
