Piano 1B Fast-track

About this course

Using a digital keyboard for each learner, the class combines tutor explanations and demonstrations with individual playing, ensemble work, listening, group discussion, and aural and theory exercises. Participants develop core piano skills including posture, hand position, keyboard orientation, simple melodies, five-finger exercises, chords, notation and changes of hand position within musical phrases.

• Read and write basic pitch, rhythm and time signatures
• Shift hand position between and within musical phrases
• Listen critically to their own playing and to others

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improver-level learners who have been studying piano for one or two terms or have played for a few months. Participation includes playing individually to the tutor, playing with others, listening and contributing to group discussion.

• Previous completion of Piano 1A Fast-track is suggested but described as ideal rather than mandatory
• Learners are expected to practise regularly between classes
• Weekly homework and study outside class form part of the course

Before you go

• Learners need access to an acoustic or digital piano outside class.
• Short practice sessions are expected between classes, with a suggested frequency of at least four times a week.
• Learners should bring a notebook, pencil, eraser and manuscript paper.
• The suggested text is Adult Piano Adventures by Nancy and Randall Faber, All-in-one Piano Course, Book 1.
• Other materials are supplied by the tutor, with online course materials such as recordings and sheet music made available.
• Headphones are provided, although learners are encouraged to bring their own.
