About this course

The course develops keyboard technique through demonstrations, individual playing, group tuition and playing with or to other learners. Classes also include listening, discussion, aural work and music theory. Repertoire progresses from around Grade 1 towards Grade 2 ABRSM standard, covering scales, arpeggios, melodies, chords, simple counterpoint and music in different styles. Learners work on posture, hand position, warm-ups, practice habits, articulation, dynamics and expression, including distinctions between legato and staccato.

What you'll learn

  • Apply appropriate posture, hand position, warm-up and practice techniques
  • Play scales, arpeggios and exercises in simple major and minor keys
  • Coordinate independent hands when playing melodies, chords and simple counterpoint
  • Distinguish between legato and staccato articulation
  • Read and write simple music using dynamics, articulation and expression markings
  • Perform piano repertoire in a range of styles

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners who can read notes and play simple tunes with both hands, or who have around a year’s experience. The Improver label indicates development beyond the fundamentals. Participation includes individual playing, playing with others, group discussion and regular practice between classes, with discussions conducted in English.

  • Requires short, regular practice between classes
  • Includes playing individually to the tutor and with other learners
  • Learners need to follow and contribute to discussions in English

Before you go

  • Regular practice of at least 20 to 30 minutes, four times a week, is expected.
  • Bring a notebook, pencil, eraser and manuscript paper.
  • The specified text is Piano Adventures: Adult Piano Adventures All-in-One Lesson Book 2 by Faber; other materials are supplied by the tutor.
  • Headphones are provided, although learners are encouraged to bring their own.
