About this course

The course develops piano technique through warm-ups, practice methods, scales, arpeggios and work on touch, coordination and finger independence. Learners apply these skills to melodies, chordal patterns, contrapuntal music and repertoire from different styles. Teaching combines tutor explanations and demonstrations with individual playing, playing alongside classmates, listening activities, group discussion, and aural and theory exercises. Classes take place mainly on digital pianos, with some work on acoustic piano. Digital resources may also be used for listening and study.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for pianists with around two years’ tuition or equivalent who play confidently at approximately Grade 2 ABRSM standard. It involves playing individually to the tutor and alongside other learners, listening, discussion and regular practice between classes. Learners need to follow and contribute to discussions in English.

• Previous tuition or equivalent experience is required.
• Regular practice outside class is an expected part of the course.
• Learners are expected to participate in playing, listening and group discussion.

Before you go

• Access to an acoustic or digital piano is required outside class.
• Learners need to practise for at least 30 minutes, five times a week, and complete activities outside class time.
• Bring manuscript paper; other materials are supplied by the tutor.
