About this course

The course combines work on tutor-assigned repertoire with pieces selected by learners, including repertoire being prepared for a graded piano examination. Technical and musicianship study includes sight-reading, scales, aural training, theory, pedal use and musical phrasing. Learners contribute to discussions about peers’ performances and may use recordings, online video, mobile applications and Microsoft Teams as part of their music study. Practice outside class forms part of the course, with learners recording tutor feedback and reflecting on their development in a journal.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for piano players at around Grade 3 standard, with at least three years’ experience. Learners are expected to discuss peers’ performances in English and to complete regular practice between classes, including at least four sessions each week.

Before you go

  • Learners need access to an acoustic or digital piano outside class.
  • Plan for practice sessions of at least 30 minutes, at least four times a week.
  • Bring relevant music scores, a notebook and a pencil.
  • Keep a journal for tutor feedback and reflections on classwork and independent practice.
  • The tutor supplies other materials. Headphones are provided, although learners are encouraged to bring their own.
  • Maintain good posture and take regular breaks to stretch and relax while practising.
