About this course

The course develops keyboard technique through scales, arpeggios, chord inversions, harmonising simple melodies, sight-reading and work on rhythm, coordination, articulation and dynamics. Learners study repertoire around Grade 1 to 2 standard, with technical, stylistic and performance issues discussed in relation to the music. Teaching combines explanation and demonstration with group playing and individual demonstration tasks; there may also be opportunities for duets and ensemble exercises. The course also covers aural awareness, keyboard harmony and related theoretical knowledge.

What you'll learn

• Play and recognise I, IV and V chords in major and minor keys
• Perform major and minor scales and arpeggios in the specified keys
• Control forte and piano dynamics, finger staccato and legato melodic lines
• Read and perform quaver rhythms
• Coordinate both hands when playing simple tunes
• Harmonise simple melodies and develop sight-reading skills

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for piano learners at improver level who can play a Grade 1 standard piece or have completed Piano/keyboards 1F. Participation includes group playing and individual demonstrations, alongside regular practice between classes. Learners need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and take part in class discussions.

Before you go

• Learners need access to a full-sized digital or acoustic piano for lessons and practice.
