About this course

Classes develop piano technique and musicianship through repertoire initially around Grade 2, with some Grade 3 material introduced later. Tutor explanations and demonstrations are combined with group playing and individual demonstration tasks. Work addresses dynamics, articulation, hand coordination, rhythm, keyboard harmony, aural awareness, performance, technical issues and practice strategies. Across the course, learners study major and minor scales and related arpeggios while extending their theoretical understanding of the music they play.

What you'll learn

• Perform at least three pieces from the class repertoire
• Apply gradual dynamics in piano performance
• Coordinate contrasting articulations, including legato in one hand and staccato in the other
• Perform four major and three minor scales appropriate to the level
• Use technical exercises to address a range of playing problems

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners who have completed Piano/keyboards 2 or have equivalent experience, working beyond fundamental techniques at an approximate Grade 2 to 3 standard. Participation includes group playing, individual demonstrations and class discussions, with written and verbal instructions in English. Regular practice between classes is expected.

• A consistent practice routine outside class is recommended, with 30 to 40 minutes of practice four to five times a week.
• Learners should be comfortable taking part in both group and individual playing activities.

Before you go

• Access to a full-sized digital or acoustic piano is needed for practice between classes.
• Learners will need one or two printed repertoire books, usually costing approximately £10 each.
• A notebook and pencil are useful.
