About this course

The course centres on modelling a portrait or full-pose clay sculpture from a clothed life model, using observation and measurement to develop an individual composition. Tutor demonstrations introduce clay-working, observation and colouring methods, while participants learn through practice on the same pose. Work is explored through peer learning and regular detailed tutor feedback. The course also covers clay preparation and handling for firing, alongside ways to colour and finish completed sculptures. Learners record progress with sketches and photographs, and consider their decisions and developing expression within a group workshop.

What you'll learn

  • Apply observation and measurement techniques when working from a life model.
  • Develop clay modelling, handling and preparation techniques for firing.
  • Explore colouring and finishing methods for completed clay sculptures.
  • Create individual compositions and make decisions about expression in life-modelled sculpture.
  • Practise workshop health and safety in relation to oneself and other studio users.
  • Record and assess progress using sketches and photographs.
