About this course

Participants explore creative and technical approaches to printmaking and illustration through demonstrations, guided projects and practical experimentation. The course covers traditional and contemporary techniques, with opportunities to produce original prints and illustrated pieces. Teaching combines group discussion with one-to-one tuition and regular tutor feedback. Projects address composition, design, visual development and the process of taking an idea from an initial concept through to a finished outcome. Learners also consider how to review their own work and respond constructively to the work of others.

Before you go

  • Drawing tools such as pencils, pens and markers should be brought to class.
  • Participants should bring protective equipment, including an apron and gloves.
  • Health and safety guidance is provided at the start of the course and when necessary during later lessons; participants must agree to follow the advised procedures.
  • Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or cause irritation in rare cases. Pregnant participants or those with sensitivities should inform the tutor so precautions can be advised.
  • The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
