About this course

The course develops recorder technique through work on fingering, breathing, articulation, intonation and scales in keys with up to three sharps or flats. Participants explore music in different styles, including basic ornamentation such as trills, mordents and turns, while extending their understanding of notation and related music theory. Teaching combines tutor explanation and demonstration with playing alongside the tutor and other learners, individual practice and regular feedback. The course covers descant, treble and tenor recorder fingering where relevant.

Is this course right for you?

This Improver-level course is intended for people who have studied recorder for at least a year, or who have played previously and want to return to the instrument. Classes involve listening to and following instructions in English, contributing to discussion and practising regularly between sessions.

• Suitable for players returning to recorder after previous experience
• Requires participation in class discussion and following instructions in English
• A regular practice routine is described as essential, ideally at least 20 minutes four times a week

Before you go

• Participants need to bring their own recorder or recorders, along with a notebook, pencil and eraser.
• Music will be supplied by the tutor via Google Classroom.
• Course books will be discussed in the first session.
