About this course
The course develops recording and studio engineering knowledge through lectures, audiovisual presentations, listening-assignment discussions, tutor-set tasks, and individual and group projects. Practical work includes recording drums, piano, percussion, woodwinds, backing vocals and small bands in a recording studio. Topics include audio equipment, acoustics, signal flow, advanced microphone techniques and the use of reverb, compression, EQ and other signal processors. Learners also practise setting up and assisting with professional recording sessions.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for improvers with prior home-studio recording experience or equivalent, rather than learners starting from no experience. Participation combines listening and note-taking with practical exercises and both group and individual projects. Basic computer and file-management skills are relevant to the course.
- Completion of Home Studio Recording or similar experience is required
- Some experience using Apple computers may be advantageous
- Access to a basic recording setup outside class is strongly recommended
- Some activities involve handling and lifting audio equipment
Before you go
- Learners should bring a pen and paper for notes and a USB memory stick for saving work.
- Handouts and materials are provided by the tutor.
- Some activities involve handling and lifting microphone stands and cables; safe-handling advice is provided.
- Learners may be exposed to high volume levels, and bringing ear plugs to each lesson is strongly encouraged.
