Rising powers: China, from Mao to Xi

About this course

The course traces China’s development from the historical experience of humiliation and the Communist victory through the Mao era, post-1970s reforms and Xi Jinping’s leadership. It considers the country’s economic transformation, military capacity, soft power, Belt and Road Initiative, relationships with Asian neighbours and the developing world, tensions with Western countries, and internal problems. Teaching combines lectures with PowerPoint presentations and discussions in both large and small groups. Participants use recent history and international relations to examine how China has become a major global power and the implications of that change.

The course is intended for learners at improver level. Some prior knowledge of China and global affairs may be useful, although it is not essential. Participation includes discussion in large and small groups, and a good standard of English is required.
